Save Me One Apple: The Life and Letters of Captain Henry Roach (1834-1863), Co. K, 21st Virginia Infantry, CSAAmong the thousands of soldiers milling around Virginia in 1861 was a private named Henry Roach. Henry was 27 years old when he enlisted on 21 May 1861 in Meherrin, Prince Edward County VA. The Meherrin Greys became Company K of the 21st Virginia Infantry. Among the thousands of soldiers milling around Virginia in 1861 was a private named Henry Roach. Henry was 27 years old when he enlisted on 21 May 1861 in Meherrin, Prince Edward County VA. The “Meherrin Greys” became Company K of the 21st Virginia Infantry. He advanced to sergeant 12 November 1861, to lieutenant 21 April 1862, and to captain 20 April 1863. He fought in many of the battles of the Virginia campaigns, including Kernstown, Cedar Mountain, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He was wounded slightly at Chancellorsville, and killed in a skirmish 26 October 1863 near Brandy Station, in the Mine Run campaign. Through the lens of his letters and other surviving documents, we are brought behind the eyes and into the feelings of the many, many soldiers he typifies.

He wrote these letters to Sue Browning, of Appomattox. She was his cousin, and in the course of their correspondence they become engaged. What we know directly of Henry comes from the 51 letters Sue saved for the rest of her life. In 1868 Sue married Samuel Harvey, who had served in the 18th Virginia Infantry Co H (Henry Roachs brothers Billy and Elijah served in Co K of the 18th). After the war the Harveys moved to western Virginia with other members of the extended Browning family. Samuel died in 1921, and Sue some time before 1930. .....

Henry was never faced with surrender, but the course of his letters show him reluctantly becoming aware of the ultimate futility of the cause. The fall of the South overturned not just a physical world. The soldiers who survived had to come to terms with the failure of an order which all their faith and moral certainty told them must triumph. Henry looked beyond the fate of his own company to the greater meaning of events. His faith faltered at times but he steadied it, he grew to be ‘if not a Christian, a better man. Henrys tragedy, like that of so many soldiers in so many wars, was that he had so little time to make use of the lessons he learned.....

Indeed, Henry is a valuable resource for examining the common pool of imagery. What might at first glance be taken for one mans attempt at poetic expression, when compared to other soldiers use of the same idiom and image, shows how people of his time and place agreed to express these common ideas. Henrys letters serve as a check mechanism for which motifs were unique to a given soldier and which were part of the common lot, the common formula. A later section of this work compares statements in Henrys correspondence to similar strains in other soldiers writings, to show how the time and the culture agreed to express various thoughts. Henry is a palatable type example of the ordinary Virginian soldier. We are by him as he was by whiskey: he was not hard to take.

less than 24 hours :/
Color: Grey Bear - Large, Color: Grey Bear - Large
smaller than i expected but had a strong interior that i was pleasantly surprised with. my lil lady very much enjoyed it, however it lasted less than 24 hours before the poor toy was skinned alive :( she loves plushies and she’s obsessed w his skin after tearing him apart. it does have a solid rubber interior that is still good as a toy, however i was hoping its skin would stay on longer than a day :( overall decent toy, 3 stars for being destroyed so quickly. wouldn’t recommend for strong chewers

Dachshund said “did I hear indestructible‽ Hold my ball”
Color: Grey Bear - Large
My 15lb Dachshund took this toy as a personal challenge. He heard me tell his human brother that it’s indestructible on the inside and said “hold my ball” promptly proceeding to schmurder the textile aspect of this adorable toy. I’d say it took him a total of 23 1/2 minutes to get to the center of this tootsie pop. I’m not even mad tho bc he had no interest in actually ingesting the outer part, and is totally into the inner toy, which is, for him, literally indestructible. It’s solid rubber, has a wild and fun bounce to it on multiple surfaces. Zodiac rates the squeak 10/10. It’s great especially for when I’m on a call or talking to someone in real life and can’t immediately throw said toy or pay complete attention to him. In conclusion: Your dog will probably love it, ((suggest to just keep an eye on them during the schmurder process and make sure you grab all the pieces that come off so none are swallowed)) Depending on your tolerance for squeaker pitch and frequency of squeak, it's a 4/10 in annoyance mostly bc it’s not a long drawn out squeak ((I can not tolerate those toys, they get “lost on top on my fridge” until I get up the courage to throw them out without him seeing)), it’s quick and requires a bit of effort to produce the sound however it’s a very high pitch squeak so it’s all up to your preference. I personally try to buy toys I can tolerate my dog loving on bc when he gets a new toy, it’s his favorite thing for a long time, like, it sleeps on the bed with us for the first month. Hope your fur child loves this as much as mine did. Not sure I’ll do the whole two in one toy thing again only he got through it so fast.

LOVE BARK TOYS!!!
Color: Rad Herring - Medium
I got this toy for my 1yr old Husky/Heeler/(possibly)GSD (approx 42lbs) mix when she came to our home mid/late October of 2025 and the toy lasted until December 3rd 2025 when we had to assist her with opening the fabric to get the toy on the inside. It was a great fun toy for her and the inside toys still is and she loves playing with it. The durability of both the outside and inside toys are great for super chewers! I was glad there was no stuffing because I had gotten her a plush toy once before and she destroyed that immediately. The fabric on this was durable enough to withstand her chewing yet soft enough that it didn’t hurt her teeth. The colors were vibrant and fun for both toys even though wear and tear kinda took some of the fabric color away. I would definitely buy this again once the inside toy is no longer safe for her, especially since the size was perfect for her too.

Good ball for strong chewers
Color: Cheeze Brawl - Large, Color: Cheeze Brawl - Large
My dog loves this ball except the outside fur gets gross really quickly. However, it’s easy to cutoff and underneath is a strong squeaky ball. It’s like two gifts in one. He’s a very heavy chewer and the ball lasts quite a bit.
