In 2006, the F-35 was named "Lightning II" after the Lockheed P-38 Lightning of World War II. Some USAF pilots have nicknamed the aircraft "Panther" instead, and other nicknames include "Fat Amy" and "Battle Penguin." The aircraft's software was developed as six releases, or Blocks, for SDD.
The F-35 Lightning II is used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps:
F-35A: Used by the Air Force
F-35B: Used by the Marine Corps, the United Kingdom, and the Italian Air Force
F-35C: Used by the Navy
