Inspired by a general dissatisfaction with the state of contemporary architecture and world affairs, this book explores the roots of contemporary Expressionistic buildings within the tradition of Modern architecture. It follows the chronology of Nikolaus PevsnerÕs The Sources of Modern Architecture and Design and examines the writing of the nineteenth century social reformer and art critic, John Ruskin.

Its purpose is to contrast design theory, from Victorian England and early twentieth century Germany, with the present day, as a tool for understanding architectureÕs place in an industrial world.

The bookÕs foundation is research, funded by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, regarding the design and construction of architectural ornament, in America, from 1870 to 1930.
