Candida by George Bernard Shaw is a thought-provoking drama that explores themes of love, marriage, and societal roles, challenging conventional notions of gender dynamics and romantic ideals. Set in the Victorian era, the play revolves around Candida, the wife of Reverend James Morell, and the unexpected tension introduced by Eugene Marchbanks, a young poet who professes his love for her.
As the story unfolds, Candida becomes the focal point of a subtle yet profound struggle between Morell's confident idealism and Marchbanks' impassioned vulnerability. Shaw subverts traditional romantic tropes by presenting Candida as a strong, self-assured woman who holds the true power in her relationships. Her ultimate choice, not between the two men but to assert her own understanding of love and loyalty, highlights Shaw's critique of societal expectations and gender roles in marriage.
Through sharp dialogue and wit, Shaw examines the dynamics of dependency and strength within relationships. The play’s exploration of Candida’s role as both nurturer and independent individual reflects Shaw’s progressive views on women’s agency and the evolving institution of marriage.
With its incisive social commentary and nuanced characters, Candida challenges traditional power structures and redefines romantic and marital relationships. Its timeless themes of self-worth, love, and independence ensure its place as a cornerstone of modern drama, inspiring audiences to rethink societal and personal expectations.

horse board book
Format: Board book
This was one of two toddler horse books I found on Amazon. There were none in local stores so I was happy to find this one. The child loves to be read to and shows his books to his dogs. I am sure it will be read regularly.
